Real talk: some of our parents and loved ones are ignoring social distancing rules during this epidemic. Here are some tactics on how to make them take the threat of COVID-19 seriously: Here’s how to respond if they tell you that the coronavirus won’t affect them or it doesn’t matter:

  • “I’m not mad that you went out this weekend even though health officials told people to stay in, but I am disappointed.”
  • “Those of us who feel healthy right now should stay home and not get sick so that those who are sick can get the care they need. We need to think about the most vulnerable.”
  • “The CDC has warned that older adults and people with serious chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease are at higher risk of catching this thing. I love and care about you and want to make sure you stay safe, and that you also don’t impact other people who are older or have these conditions.”
  • “If you won’t listen to me, at least listen to the CDC and the World Health Organization. They’re the experts!”
  • “Why don’t we use this time to work through things that we have pending in the house? Like cleaning our rooms, the kitchen and the garage?”
