Washington, D.C. – Tonight, in his address to a joint session of Congress, President Biden called on Congress to pass legislation to provide undocumented immigrants with a path to citizenship.
Greisa Martinez Rosas, Executive Director of United We Dream, said:
“Earlier today immigrant youth and allies from across the country took action to remind President Biden and Democrats that we are holding them accountable for their promises to deliver citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants this year. After 35 years of inaction on citizenship by politicians in both parties, Democrats have a critical window of opportunity to create a pathway to citizenship with a 51 vote strategy. It is clear to us that Republicans will not negotiate in good faith and we cannot allow them to hold critical relief for our communities hostage. Citizenship is relief and we will not settle for anything less. Democrats can and must add citizenship for immigrant youth, TPS holders, essential workers and farm workers to the American Jobs Plan right now, and move towards building an immigration system that recognizes immigrants’ full humanity. That’s the vision that helped us win in November and January, and that’s how we will win citizenship for all this year.”
